    Description

    Authentic 1872 Officer's
    Leather
Belt and Brass Buckle,  by Pettibone, WOW!!
I purchased this officer's belt in a little antique store in Mount Vernon, Illinois, in 1988. We are downsizing, and it's time to move it on to someone else who will appreciate it as much as I have.
The buckle is in great condition -- it has hardly any wear.   It is made of brass and is 2 7/8" long and 2" wide.  All the details are easy to see, even the stars and the "E Pluribus Unm" on the front and the maker's name of the back. There is a little bit of corrosion.    It has a wonderful patina on it. The leather belt is 1 5/8" wide and is in very good condition. It is not cracked and is still flexible.  There is some wear and it has two small spots where pieces are missing - one at the bottom edge and one at one end.  The  back of the buckle does have the opening where the other end of the belt fits.  It is bent in a bit so that it does not latch. It has the "frog" that holds the sword in place.  Please see photos.
The guy in the antique store said it was from a local estate sale near Mount Vernon, IL. The leather belt itself measures about 36 inches in length fully extended. There's also the frog, which is the piece that holds the sword. The stamp on the leather and on the belt both say they were made by the Pettibone Manufacturing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio.
