Description

This extremely rare gorget necklace is from the mementos of Conrad P. Dietrich of New York's 7th Regiment. The Old Guard of the City of New York was established in 1868 and this gorget dates to the late 19th century.
6.5" wide gorget is either gilt metal or gold plated (unmarked) with raised decoration of a silver (unmarked) laurel leaf wreath with "OG" in its center. The chains attached appear to be gold filled and are 4" long and 7" long. The two chains were originally both 4" long and an "S" link and 3 inches of additional chain were added to extend one of the chains.
The chains are attached to the gorget by gilt metal or gold plated buttons embossed with laurel leaf wreaths and "OG."
The gorget is a convex form with the silvered laurel leaf wreath and the letters "OG" pinned through it.
The gold plating has been polished off in some places on this collar and the back side has copper corrosion. Preserving its old patina, this has not been cleaned or polished.
