BATTLE OF LITTLE BIGHORN
.  Thomas McDougall (1845-1909) commanded the pack train supporting General George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876.  He joined the Marcus Reno and Frederick Benteen defensive position after Custer and his men were wiped out. McDougall went on to serve in the Indian Wars until 1890 and commanded part of the escorting troops when Chief Joseph and his family surrendered.

Scandalous original photograph of Battle of Little Bighorn survivor Thomas McDougall dressed as a woman.  The exact reasons for this photograph are unknown, but McDougall has provided a handwritten inscription on the verso with an explanation: “For Dear Sister Sadie, With love of a “Summer Girl”.

The photograph measures 4” by 3.5”, in fine condition with minor rubbing and paper loss along the borders and minor foxing on the verso, and originally from the collection Glenwood J. Swanson, a well-known Indian Wars historian, collector, and author, and is pictured on page 260 in Swanson’s book
